Early Life

Gunnar Nelson was born on September 20, 1967, in Santa Monica, to musician and actor Ricky Nelson and actress-painter Kristin Nelson. He comes from a prominent entertainment family: his maternal uncle is actor Mark Harmon, and his grandfather was bandleader and actor Ozzie Nelson. Gunnar and his twin brother, Matthew, started writing songs at age six. Tragically, their father died in a plane crash in 1985, leaving the family in debt.

Career Beginnings

In the 1980s, the Nelson twins performed under the names The Nelsons and Strange Agents, gaining experience in the Los Angeles club scene. In 1986, they became the first unsigned musical group to appear on Saturday Night Live, with Gunnar on drums. Shortly after, Gunnar learned guitar, allowing the brothers to share lead roles in their band.

They collaborated with Geffen Records A&R executive John Kalodner and co-wrote “Two Heads Are Better Than One” with Dweezil Zappa, which became the theme for the 1989 film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
