Timothy Hutton was born on August 16, 1960, in Malibu, California. He is the son of teacher Maryline Hutton and actor Jim Hutton.

His parents divorced when he was three years old, after which he moved to Boston with his mother and older sister, Heidi. The family later lived in Connecticut before returning to California in the early 1970s.

At the age of 15, Hutton moved in with his father in Los Angeles. He attended Fairfax High School, where he became interested in acting. While performing in a school production of Guys and Dolls, he realized that he wanted to pursue acting professionally.

Timothy Hutton’s Acting Career

Hutton began his professional acting career in television during the late 1970s. His early credits included television films such as Zuma Beach, Friendly Fire, The Best Place to Be, And Baby Makes Six and Young Love, First Love.

In 1980, he appeared in Sultan and the Rock Star and Father Figure. However, his career changed dramatically that same year when he landed the role of Conrad Jarrett in Ordinary People.

The film, directed by Robert Redford, focused on a wealthy suburban family struggling with grief following the accidental death of one of its sons. Hutton played Conrad, a teenager dealing with survivor’s guilt and emotional trauma.

Film Career

Following his Oscar win, Hutton appeared in a series of major films. He starred alongside Tom Cruise, Sean Penn and George C. Scott in Taps, which became a commercial success.

He later appeared in Daniel, Iceman and Turk 182. In 1985, he starred opposite Sean Penn in the spy drama The Falcon and the Snowman.

Leverage ran for five seasons through 2012 and became one of Hutton’s best-known television projects.

Hutton has also worked behind the camera as a director.

He directed an episode of the anthology television series Amazing Stories in 1986. More than a decade later, he made his feature-film directorial debut with Digging to China, a 1997 drama that featured Evan Rachel Wood in her first film role.

Hutton also directed seven episodes of A Nero Wolfe Mystery, combining his work as an actor and director on the series.

Stage Career

Although Hutton is best known for his film and television work, he has also appeared on stage.

In 2000, he starred in a Broadway revival of The Subject Was Roses. His theatre work added another dimension to his long acting career and allowed him to return to the stage after establishing himself in Hollywood.

Timothy Hutton married actress Debra Winger in 1986. The couple had a son named Noah before divorcing in 1990.

In 2000, Hutton married illustrator Aurore Giscard d’Estaing, the niece of former French president Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. They had a son named Milo before separating in 2009.
