Early Life

Born on May 15, 1997, in Vernon, Normandy, Dembélé grew up in a multicultural family with a Mauritanian-Senegalese mother and a Malian father. He began playing football at a young age and joined local clubs ALM Evreux and later Evreux FC 27. Coaches quickly recognized his raw talent and urged him to pursue a professional career.

Dembélé’s big break came when he joined Stade Rennais’ youth system, where he developed into one of the most exciting prospects in French football.

Club Career

At just 17 years old, Dembélé made his senior debut for Rennes’ reserve team in 2014 and scored 13 goals in 18 appearances. By late 2015, he made his Ligue 1 debut for the Rennes first team and scored his first professional goal shortly after. His performances led club officials to liken him to a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

In 2016, he signed a five-year contract with Borussia Dortmund in Germany. Dembélé made an immediate impact, scoring and assisting key goals throughout the season. His standout moment came in the 2017 DFB-Pokal Final, where he scored and helped Dortmund lift their first major trophy in five years. He was later awarded “Man of the Match,” Bundesliga Rookie of the Season, and earned a spot in the Team of the Season.

A Historic Move to Barcelona

Dembélé’s meteoric rise caught the attention of FC Barcelona, who in August 2017 signed him for a staggering €105 million, plus add-ons—making him the joint-second most expensive player in history at the time. His move followed the departure of Neymar to PSG, and he was expected to fill the void.

He made his debut in September 2017, but injuries marred his early seasons. A hamstring tear sidelined him for four months, followed by another setback in early 2018. Nevertheless, he bounced back and scored his first Champions League goal for Barcelona in March 2018 against Chelsea. That season, he won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

In 2018, he scored the winning goal in the Spanish Super Cup and continued to impress with goals in both domestic and European competitions. His incredible solo strike against Tottenham Hotspur earned him UEFA Champions League Goal of the Week.

Unfortunately, the 2019-2020 season was plagued by injuries, including a severe hamstring tear requiring surgery. Dembélé missed most of that campaign but returned in October 2020, scoring against Juventus in the Champions League.

International Career with France

Dembélé made his debut for the French national team in 2016 and scored his first international goal in June 2017 against England. In 2018, he was part of the France squad that won the FIFA World Cup in Russia, although he had a limited role during the tournament.

He continues to be called up for international duty and remains a part of France’s attacking rotation under Didier Deschamps.

Personal Life

In 2021, Dembélé was embroiled in a controversy after a video surfaced showing him and teammate Antoine Griezmann making offensive comments about Asian technicians. Dembélé later issued a public apology, stating that he never intended to be racist but acknowledged his comments were disrespectful.

That same year, Dembélé married Rima Edbouche in a private Moroccan wedding ceremony. Edbouche, a TikTok star with Moroccan roots, grew up in France and shares a low-key life with the footballer.

Endorsements

Dembélé has endorsement deals with major brands, including Nike, and frequently appears in video games like FIFA. Despite his fame, he leads a relatively private life and has been praised for maintaining humility despite his massive success and wealth.
