Kenyans get fuel price relief ahead of festive season

Kenyans will continue paying the same prices for fuel after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced that pump prices will remain unchanged for the next 30 days, up to January. The decision comes as welcome news for families, motorists and businesses preparing for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

In its latest monthly fuel price review, EPRA said the prices of super petrol, diesel and kerosene will stay the same across the country. This means households and travelers will not face additional fuel costs during a period when transport and energy needs are usually higher.

In Nairobi, a litre of super petrol will continue to sell at Sh184.52, diesel at Sh171.47 and kerosene at Sh154.78. These prices are the same as those that were in place during the previous pricing cycle, which ended at midnight.

The move is expected to ease pressure on many people planning to travel upcountry for the holidays, as well as those running small businesses that depend on fuel for transport, cooking and power. Fuel prices often affect the cost of food, transport fares, and other essential goods, making EPRA’s decision especially important at this time of year.

EPRA explained that while global fuel prices showed mixed trends, local pump prices would remain stable during the review period. According to the regulator, the average landed cost of imported super petrol dropped by 4.25 percent in November, falling to US$592.84 per cubic metre from US$619.14 in October.

However, the cost of importing diesel increased by 3.02 percent to US$654.24 per cubic metre, while kerosene rose by 5.52 percent to US$667.05 per cubic metre over the same period. Despite these increases, EPRA chose to keep local prices unchanged to cushion consumers.

“In the period under review, the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for super petrol, diesel, and kerosene remain unchanged,” EPRA said in a statement.

The announcement brings a sense of relief to many Kenyans who have been dealing with the rising cost of living. As the festive season begins, stable fuel prices are expected to support smoother travel, steady transport costs and some financial breathing room for households across the country.
