Who are the Big 4 of Agricultural Inputs?

The “Big 4 of Agri Inputs” refers to the four largest multinational companies that dominate the global market for agricultural inputs such as seeds, crop protection chemicals, biotechnology and digital farming technologies. These corporations play a major role in shaping modern agriculture by developing improved seed varieties, pesticides, herbicides and advanced farming technologies used by farmers worldwide.

The Big 4 companies emerged after a series of major mergers in the global agricultural industry between 2015 and 2018. Today, these corporations control a large share of the global seed and agrochemical markets.

 1. Bayer (including former Monsanto)

Bayer became one of the largest agricultural input companies in the world after acquiring Monsanto in 2018 for approximately $63 billion.

The merger combined Bayer’s crop protection chemicals with Monsanto’s advanced seed genetics and biotechnology. Today, Bayer Crop Science develops and sells a wide range of agricultural inputs including:

  •  Hybrid and genetically modified seeds
  •  Herbicides and pesticides
  •  Digital farming tools
  •  Biological crop protection products

One of Bayer’s most well-known products is the herbicide Roundup, which has been widely used by farmers globally for weed control.

 2. Corteva Agriscience

Corteva Agriscience was formed in 2019 after the merger and restructuring of Dow Chemical Company and DuPont.

Corteva focuses on developing high-performance seeds, crop protection chemicals, and agricultural innovations. The company owns major seed brands such as Pioneer and produces herbicides, fungicides and insecticides used in crop production.

The company also invests heavily in agricultural biotechnology and digital farming solutions that help farmers increase yields while using fewer resources.

3. Syngenta Group

Syngenta Group is a major global agribusiness company headquartered in Switzerland and owned by the Chinese state-owned company ChemChina.

Syngenta is a leading producer of crop protection chemicals and seeds. The company provides products such as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and hybrid seeds designed to improve crop productivity.

The company also works on sustainable agriculture solutions, including biological crop protection and soil health products that help farmers maintain productivity while protecting the environment.

4. BASF

BASF is one of the world’s largest chemical companies and a major player in the agricultural input industry.

Although BASF is not as dominant in the seed market as some of the other companies, it is a global leader in crop protection chemicals and agricultural innovations.

The company develops products such as:

  •  Herbicides
  •  Fungicides
  •  Insecticides
  •  Biological crop protection solutions
  •  Digital farming tools

BASF also focuses on sustainable agriculture technologies aimed at improving crop yields while reducing environmental impact.

Why the Big 4 Matter in Global Agriculture

The Big 4 agricultural input companies collectively control a significant portion of the global seed and pesticide markets. Their innovations influence how crops are grown around the world.

These companies invest billions of dollars in agricultural research and development to create improved seed varieties, pest control solutions, and climate-resilient farming technologies. Their products help farmers increase yields, manage pests and diseases and improve farm efficiency.

However, their dominance has also raised debates about market concentration, seed patents and the cost of agricultural inputs for smallholder farmers.

The role of the Big 4 in Africa and Kenya

In Africa and countries like Kenya, these companies supply seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, and digital farming technologies through local distributors and partnerships with governments, NGOs, and agribusiness firms.

Many agricultural programs aimed at improving food security and farmer productivity rely on products developed by these companies. At the same time, there is growing interest in combining these technologies with local innovations and sustainable farming practices.

The Big 4 of agricultural inputs; Bayer, Corteva Agriscience, Syngenta Group, and BASF are the largest companies shaping the global agriculture industry today. Through their investments in seeds, biotechnology and crop protection products, these companies continue to influence how food is produced worldwide.

Understanding these companies is important for farmers, agribusiness professionals and policymakers because their innovations play a key role in global food production and agricultural development.
