Sam Neill was born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
His father served as a British Army officer, while his mother was English. When he was seven years old, the family relocated to New Zealand, where he spent most of his childhood.
Neill attended schools in Christchurch before studying English literature at Victoria University of Wellington.
