How to Register a Business Name in Kenya

Registering a business name in Kenya is an essential step for entrepreneurs looking to establish a formal and recognized entity. The process is straightforward, and it ensures your business operates legally while protecting your brand identity.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register a business name in Kenya.
The first step is to conduct a name search. This is done through the eCitizen platform, which is the official online portal for government services in Kenya. Create an account on eCitizen if you don’t already have one, and navigate to the Business Registration Service (BRS) section. Here, you’ll search for your preferred business name to ensure it is unique and not already in use by another entity. The name search fee is KSH 150, and results are typically available within one to two working days.
Once your business name is approved, the next step is to complete the registration process. On the eCitizen platform, select the “Register a Business Name” option under the BRS section. You will be required to provide details about your business, such as the approved name, nature of the business, and physical address, including county, town, and street information. Additionally, you’ll need to provide the details of the business owner(s), including full names, ID or passport numbers, and KRA PINs.
After filling in the necessary information, you will be prompted to upload supporting documents. These include a copy of your identification (ID or passport), your KRA PIN certificate, and, if applicable, the PINs of other business partners. It’s crucial to ensure all information provided matches your official documents to avoid delays or rejections.
Next, you will pay the registration fee, which is currently KSH 950. Payment can be made through various options, including mobile money (M-Pesa), debit or credit.
Once all the process is done you are set to start your business.
