How to sell products on Jumia or Amazon from Kenya

Selling products on Jumia or Amazon from Kenya requires proper planning, registration, and an understanding of the respective platforms’ requirements. Both platforms offer immense opportunities to reach global and regional markets, making them attractive for entrepreneurs.

To start selling on Jumia, focus on products that are in high demand, such as electronics, fashion, home appliances, and beauty products. Begin by visiting Jumia’s seller portal and signing up as a vendor. During registration, provide essential details such as your business name, physical address, and contact information. You will also need to upload a copy of your ID, KRA PIN certificate, and business registration documents if applicable. Once approved, you will gain access to Jumia’s Seller Center, where you can manage your inventory, orders, and pricing.

Uploading products to Jumia requires high-quality images, clear descriptions, and competitive pricing. Use sharp photos that showcase your products from different angles, and write concise descriptions highlighting key features and benefits. Accurate product categorization is crucial to ensure your items are easily discoverable by customers. Consider Jumia’s marketing services, such as sponsored ads, to improve your product visibility on the platform.

Jumia handles logistics through its Jumia Express service or its pickup stations. Ensure your products are well-packaged and labeled according to their guidelines. Timely delivery is critical as it directly affects your seller rating. Monitor your account regularly to address customer inquiries, process orders, and track your sales performance.

For Amazon, the process is slightly more complex but opens the door to international markets. Start by creating a seller account on Amazon’s official website. Choose between an individual plan, which charges per item sold, or a professional plan that involves a monthly subscription fee. As a Kenyan seller, you’ll need to select Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) or handle shipping yourself.

Since Amazon primarily caters to a global audience, you must focus on products with export potential, such as handcrafted items, coffee, or other niche products unique to Kenya. Register your products under the appropriate categories, ensuring compliance with Amazon’s product listing policies. For example, export-oriented products must meet international quality standards and certification requirements.

If you choose FBA, send your inventory to an Amazon warehouse in the region you’re targeting. Amazon will manage storage, packing, shipping, and customer service on your behalf. While FBA simplifies logistics, it involves additional costs for storage and fulfillment, so factor this into your pricing strategy.

Marketing is essential to stand out on Amazon’s competitive marketplace. Use Amazon’s sponsored ads, customer reviews, and well-optimized product descriptions to improve visibility. Additionally, explore social media or blogs to drive traffic to your Amazon listings.

Both platforms require cosistency in updating inventory, addressing customer complaints, and adapting to market trends. Monitor your sales analytics regularly to identify best-selling items and areas for improvement. Selling on Jumia and Amazon can be a profitable venture for Kenyan entrepreneurs.
