Early Life
Neil Percival Young was born on November 12, 1945, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
He spent much of his childhood in Canada and contracted polio in 1952. When he was 12, Young went to live with his mother following his parents’ separation.
During the 1950s, he developed a strong interest in rock and roll. He listened to artists including Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, among others.
Young’s early musical development involved several string instruments. He learned to play instruments including the ukulele and banjo before eventually developing his distinctive guitar style.
While attending high school, Young formed his first band, the Jades. His interest in music eventually became so strong that he left school to pursue a career as a professional musician.
He later joined the instrumental rock band The Squires, beginning a journey that would eventually take him from the Canadian music scene to international fame.
Early Music Career
After leaving The Squires, Young began writing songs and developing his identity as a songwriter.
One of his early compositions was “Sugar Mountain,” which became an important song in his catalog. He also wrote “Flying on the Ground Is Wrong,” which was recorded by The Guess Who and helped establish Young as a songwriter capable of achieving mainstream attention.
Young later joined the Mynah Birds, a band fronted by musician Rick James.
After the group broke up, Young and musician Bruce Palmer traveled to Los Angeles in search of new opportunities.
Their move to California proved to be a major turning point.
Buffalo Springfield
In Los Angeles, Young and Palmer connected with other musicians and helped form Buffalo Springfield.
The group was active for only about two years but released three albums during that period. Buffalo Springfield developed a reputation for combining folk influences with psychedelic rock.
The band’s music also connected with the social and political climate of the 1960s, particularly the growing Peace Movement.
Although Buffalo Springfield’s run was relatively short, the group became an important part of Young’s early career and helped establish him as a serious songwriter and musician.
Solo Career
Young began his solo recording career with the release of his self-titled album in 1969.
The album received mixed reviews, but Young quickly found greater success with his next project.
For his second solo album, “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” Young worked with Crazy Horse. The collaboration became an important part of his musical identity.
He later moved in a different direction for “After the Gold Rush,” working with other musicians rather than relying exclusively on Crazy Horse.
The album helped establish Young as an artist willing to move between folk, rock and more experimental styles.
Harvest and Heart of Gold
One of the biggest commercial successes of Young’s career came with the 1972 album “Harvest.”
The album produced the hit single “Heart of Gold,” which reached No. 1 on the charts.
“Harvest” significantly increased Young’s mainstream popularity and became one of the defining albums of his career.
Another notable song from this period was “Old Man,” which also became a lasting part of his catalog.
The commercial success of “Harvest” helped generate substantial income through album sales, performances and songwriting royalties.
Experimental Period and Career Resurgence
After his major mainstream success, Young entered a more experimental phase of his career.
Some of his releases during this period were less commercially successful, but they reflected his willingness to explore different musical styles rather than follow a consistent commercial formula.
Young eventually returned to a broader audience.
In 1989, he released “Rockin’ in the Free World,” a song that became one of his best-known later-period recordings.
His influence also extended to a younger generation of musicians. Artists associated with the grunge movement, including Kurt Cobain, cited Young as an influence.
Young’s connection with alternative and grunge musicians helped introduce his work to audiences who had discovered rock music decades after his early career.
Music, Activism and Environmental Causes
Young has frequently used his music to address social and environmental issues.
Over the years, he has spoken publicly about environmental protection, the welfare of small farmers and other causes.
He has also supported electric vehicles and became involved in efforts related to education for children with disabilities.
His activism has sometimes been reflected directly in his music and public activities, making social and environmental issues an important part of his public identity.
Music Catalog Sale
One of the most significant financial transactions in Young’s career came in January 2021.
Young sold a 50% stake in the copyright and income from approximately 1,120 songs to investment firm Hipgnosis for a reported $150 million.
Music catalogs have become valuable financial assets because successful songs can generate royalty income for decades through recordings, streaming, radio, licensing and other uses.
Young’s catalog transaction therefore represented a major financial event and provides important context when examining Neil Young Net Worth.

Spotify
In January 2022, Young became involved in a highly publicized dispute with Spotify.
He posted a letter demanding that Spotify remove either his music or Joe Rogan’s podcast. Young objected to what he regarded as vaccine misinformation associated with Rogan’s program.
Spotify ultimately kept Rogan’s podcast on the platform, while Young’s music was removed.
The situation also highlighted the distinction between ownership of music copyrights and ownership of master recordings.
At the time, Young’s music catalog deal with Hipgnosis involved a 50% interest in his songwriting and royalty income, while Warner Music controlled his master recordings. This meant the catalog buyer did not necessarily control every decision concerning where the recordings could be distributed.
Business Ventures
Music has not been Young’s only business interest.
He was a part-owner of Lionel, LLC, a company known for model trains and related products.
Young had a significant interest in the company and became involved in its product development. He was named as a co-inventor on several patents related to model trains.
However, Lionel went through bankruptcy proceedings in 2008, resulting in Young losing his shares in the company. He remained involved with the company’s board.
Young also co-founded Pono, a digital music service designed to offer high-quality recordings.
The service was launched with the goal of providing listeners with music that preserved greater audio quality. Pono eventually shut down in 2017 after Omnifone, the company operating the service, was acquired by Apple.
Personal Life
Young married his first wife, Susan Acevedo, in 1968. Their marriage lasted about two years before ending in divorce.
He later entered a relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress. The couple had a child together.
In 1978, Young married Pegi Young, whom he had met while she was working as a waitress near his ranch. The couple remained married for 36 years before divorcing in 2014.
Young later began a relationship with actress Daryl Hannah. The couple married in 2018.
Young has generally maintained a strong connection to environmental causes and rural life, particularly through his long association with his California ranch.
Health Challenges
Young experienced a serious health scare in 2005 when he was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm.
He underwent a successful neuroradiological procedure but experienced complications two days later when he suffered significant bleeding from a femoral artery.
Despite the medical emergency, Young continued his music career and remained active as a performer and recording artist.
Real Estate
Real estate has also played a role in Young’s financial history.
In 1970, he purchased Broken Arrow Ranch, a roughly 1,000-acre property in La Honda, California, for approximately $350,000 in cash.
Young later expanded the property by purchasing additional land.
His real estate portfolio has also included property in Hawaii and Malibu.
In November 2015, Young listed his longtime Hawaii property for $24.5 million. He ultimately sold the estate in 2018 for approximately $20 million to George Zimmer, the Men’s Wearhouse co-founder and former CEO.
In 2016, Young purchased a Malibu property from Daryl Hannah for approximately $3.6 million. Hannah had purchased the 17.6-acre property in 2001 for about $1.32 million.
The Malibu property was later destroyed in the 2018 Woolsey Fire.
Awards
Young’s career has earned him some of the most significant honors in music.
He has won multiple Grammy Awards and Juno Awards and has been recognized for both his songwriting and recording work.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. His first induction recognized his solo career, while his second came as a member of Buffalo Springfield.
His continued influence across folk rock, country rock, hard rock and alternative music has made his catalog one of the most enduring in modern music.
