Patrick James Riley was born on March 20, 1945, in Rome, New York, and grew up in Schenectady. His father, Leon Riley, played minor league baseball and appeared in four games for the Philadelphia Phillies. Pat excelled in both basketball and football in high school and continued playing both sports at the University of Kentucky. He was drafted by the San Diego Rockets in the NBA and the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL but chose basketball.
Playing Career
Riley played for the San Diego Rockets, later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, and finished his career with the Phoenix Suns. He won an NBA Championship in 1972 with the Lakers and retired after the 1975-76 season.
Coaching Career
Riley became an assistant coach for the Lakers after a bike accident sidelined head coach Jack McKinney.
