Portia Lee James DeGeneres was born Amanda Lee Rogers on January 31, 1973, in Horsham, Victoria, Australia. She was raised in Grovedale by her mother, Margaret, after the death of her father when she was nine years old.
From a young age, she worked in modeling and commercial acting. At 15, she adopted the stage name Portia de Rossi, inspired by a character in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. She later studied at Geelong Grammar School and the University of Melbourne, where she initially pursued law before shifting her focus to acting.
