Edward James Martin “Ted” Koppel was born on February 8, 1940, in Nelson, Lancashire, England, to Jewish parents who fled Nazi Germany. The family moved to the United States when Ted was 13. Inspired by Edward R. Murrow, Koppel pursued journalism, attending the McBurney School in New York and later earning a B.S. from Syracuse University and an M.A. in political science and communications from Stanford University.
Career
Koppel began his career in radio at WMCA in New York and joined ABC Radio in 1963. He gained attention for his coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and later worked as a war correspondent and U.S. State Department reporter. He traveled with President Richard Nixon to China in the early 1970s and anchored the Saturday edition of ABC Evening News.
