Vondie Curtis-Hall was born on September 20, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, to Angeline and Curtis Hall. His mother worked as a nurse, while his father ran a construction business. He grew up alongside his siblings, Kevan and Sherrie, and attended Presentation Our Lady of Victory grade school in Detroit, where he was taught by the Oblate Sisters of Providence.
