Early Life
Wynonna Judd was born Christina Claire Ciminella on May 30, 1964, in Ashland, Kentucky.
Her mother was Naomi Judd, who later became her musical partner in The Judds.
Wynonna was raised alongside her younger half-sister, actress Ashley Judd.
The family moved to Los Angeles in 1968. After Naomi’s marriage ended, the family eventually returned to Kentucky.
Music played an important role in Wynonna’s childhood. Her mother regularly played country music, which helped inspire Wynonna’s interest in becoming a singer.
She received a guitar for Christmas and began learning to play the instrument.
In 1979, Wynonna and Naomi moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where they pursued careers in country music.
That decision would eventually change both of their lives.
The Judds
Naomi and Wynonna formed The Judds and began building a career as a mother-daughter country music duo.
Between 1983 and 1991, the group recorded 23 hit singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, including 14 number-one hits.
The Judds also released eight studio albums, a Christmas album and two greatest-hits collections.
During their relatively short career, they sold more than 20 million records worldwide.
The duo also collected numerous major awards, including Grammy Awards, Country Music Association awards and Billboard Music Awards.
Their sound combined traditional country influences with strong vocal harmonies, while Wynonna’s powerful voice became one of the group’s defining characteristics.
The Judds became one of the biggest-selling country duos of their era.
Why The Judds Split
The Judds’ successful run came to an end in 1991 after Naomi was diagnosed with hepatitis C.
The illness forced Naomi to retire from performing, bringing the mother-daughter duo’s regular career to an end.
The pair later reunited several times.
They performed together at a New Year’s Eve concert in 1999 and toured in 2000.
In 2010, they reunited for an 18-city tour known as The Last Encore.
The successful reunion eventually led to the release of I Will Stand by You: The Essential Collection in 2011.
Wynonna Judd’s Solo Career
After The Judds ended, Wynonna signed with MCA Records and began performing simply as Wynonna.
She made her first major solo television appearance at the 1992 American Music Awards, where she performed her debut single, “She Is His Only Need.”
The song became a number-one hit on the Billboard country chart.
Her self-titled debut album was an enormous commercial success.
It produced four consecutive number-one country singles, including “She Is His Only Need,” “I Saw the Light,” “My Strongest Weakness” and “No One Else on Earth.”
The album established Wynonna as a major solo country star.
Her second album, Tell Me Why, arrived in 1993 and was certified platinum.
It produced five consecutive Top 10 country hits, including “Only Love,” “Is It Over Yet?,” “Rock Bottom,” “Girls with Guitars” and “Tell Me Why.”
Her success earned her the Academy of Country Music’s Female Artist of the Year award in 1993.

Wynonna’s Later Music Career
Wynonna continued releasing music throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
Her third album, Revelations, was released in 1996 and also achieved platinum status.
It produced her fourth and final number-one solo country single, “To Be Loved by You.”
She later released The Other Side, New Day Dawning, What the World Needs Now Is Love, Her Story: Scenes from a Lifetime and Sing: Chapter 1.
In 2016, she released Wynonna & The Big Noise, working with her band The Big Noise.
The album produced singles including “Jesus and a Jukebox” and “Things I Lean On.”
She released Recollections in 2020.
Her career has continued to include touring, live performances and collaborations, allowing her to remain active in country music decades after her initial breakthrough.
Television Career
Wynonna Judd has also earned income through television appearances.
She provided the voice of Molly Cule on the animated series The Magic School Bus and appeared on Blue’s Clues.
She later guest-starred on Touched by an Angel and Hope & Faith.
In 2007, she starred in the NBC television special Wynonna: A Tribute on Ice.
She also hosted the fourth season of the country music competition series Nashville Star.
In 2013, Wynonna competed on the 16th season of Dancing with the Stars, where she was partnered with professional dancer Tony Dovolani. The pair became the first couple eliminated from the competition.
Her television work has helped expand her career beyond music and provided another source of income over the years.
The Judds’ Final Performances
The Judds made one of their most significant reunions in 2022.
Naomi and Wynonna performed together at the CMT Music Awards in April that year.
The performance was particularly significant because it came shortly before Naomi’s death.
The Judds were also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame shortly afterward.
Following Naomi’s death, Wynonna continued performing and honoured her mother’s legacy through music.
A concert special, CMT Presents The Judds: Love is Alive – The Final Concert, aired later in 2022.
The programme recreated The Judds’ famous farewell concert from 1991.
Wynonna Judd’s Personal Life
Wynonna has been married three times.
She married Arch Kelley III in 1996. The couple had children and later divorced in 1998.
She married D.R. Roach in November 2003. Their marriage ended after several years.
In June 2012, Wynonna married Cactus Moser, a drummer who had also worked with the country band Highway 101.
Two months after their wedding, Moser was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in South Dakota. The crash resulted in the amputation of his left leg.
Despite the setback, the couple continued their life together.
Naomi Judd’s Death
Naomi Judd died in April 2022, shortly after The Judds’ final public performance.
Her death came one day before The Judds were scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Wynonna and her sister Ashley paid tribute to their mother during the induction ceremony.
Wynonna later continued with The Judds’ scheduled tour dates as a tribute to Naomi.
The tour became an important part of Wynonna’s effort to honour her mother’s musical legacy while continuing her own career.
