He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Brandeis University and later completed graduate degrees in journalism and business at Columbia University.

Albom began his career as a sports journalist, freelancing for Sports Illustrated, GEO, and The Philadelphia Inquirer, and covering Olympic events in Europe. He gained prominence as a sports columnist for the Detroit Free Press, eventually adding a popular weekly non-sports column focusing on life, values, and human-interest stories. Albom’s literary breakthrough came in 1997 with Tuesdays with Morrie, chronicling his weekly visits with former college professor Morrie Schwartz, who was dying of ALS. The book sold over 20 million copies and was adapted into an Emmy-winning television movie.
