He attended Our Lady of Peace Catholic School and discovered figure skating at age 10 after attending an ice-skating-themed birthday party. His talent became evident almost immediately, prompting his mother to drive him regularly to Philadelphia for advanced coaching. At just 11 years old, Rippon was cast as a young Scott Hamilton in the touring show Stars on Ice.

Junior Success

From 2000 to 2007, Rippon trained under coach Yelena Sergeeva. He gained national attention in 2005 after winning silver at the U.S. Championships (Novice) and gold at the Triglav Trophy in Slovenia.

The turning point in his junior career came during the 2007–2008 season, when Rippon won the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final, becoming the first male skater to score over 200 points at the junior level. That same year, he captured the 2008 U.S. Junior National Championship and won gold at the World Junior Championships. He successfully defended his World Junior title in 2009, becoming the first singles skater ever to win the event twice.

Transition to Senior Competition

Rippon moved into senior-level competition in the late 2000s and trained with several elite coaches, including Nikolai Morozov, Brian Orser, Jason Dungjen, and later Rafael Arutyunyan.

Throughout the early 2010s, he posted consistent international results, medaling at events such as:

  • Four Continents Championships (Gold, 2010)
  • U.S. National Championships (Silver, 2012)
  • Skate America (Silver, 2017)

Despite recurring injuries, Rippon remained one of the most technically refined and artistically expressive skaters in the U.S. field.
