Early Life

Born on September 8, 1989, in Stockholm, Sweden, Tim Bergling began mixing music in his bedroom at just eight years old. Inspired by his older brother, also a DJ, he started producing professionally by the age of 16. In 2007, he signed with Dejfitts Plays, and further refined his style through the Laidback Luke Forums, cultivating his signature sound rooted in deep house.

He adopted the name Avicii, referencing the “lowest level of Buddhist hell,” after discovering his real name was already taken on Myspace. His early tracks like “Lazy Lace” and a remix of the video game tune “Lazy Jones” built early buzz and led to his first record deal with Strike! Recordings.

Meteoric Rise in Electronic Music

By 2009, Avicii was a prolific producer, releasing tracks like “Sound of Now” and “Even.” His 2010 track “Seek Bromance” charted internationally and paved the way for even greater success. The real breakthrough came in 2011 with the release of “Levels”, which sampled Etta James and became an instant EDM classic. It reached #1 in Sweden (certified 8x Platinum) and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.

Chart-Topping Albums

Avicii released his debut studio album, “True” in 2013, which topped charts in Sweden and Australia and featured the genre-defining hit “Wake Me Up”—a fusion of EDM, folk, and country that topped charts in nine countries.

In 2015, his sophomore album “Stories” also reached #1 in Sweden, reinforcing his reputation as a cross-genre innovator. Avicii’s singles like “Hey Brother”, “Waiting for Love”, and “I Could Be the One” continued to dominate global charts. He collaborated with high-profile artists such as Coldplay on “Hymn for the Weekend” and with Nicky Romero on chart-topping tracks.

Tours, Earnings, and Real Estate

Avicii was not only a studio powerhouse—he was also one of the highest-paid live performers in the world. At his peak, he earned up to $500,000 per gig and between $15 to $20 million annually. From June 2014 to June 2015 alone, he grossed $30 million, and across his career, he earned an estimated $140 million in total.

In 2014, he purchased a $15.5 million mansion in the Hollywood Hills, which was sold posthumously for $17.5 million.

Health Challenges

Despite the fame, Avicii faced severe health issues, including acute pancreatitis brought on by alcohol abuse. He underwent surgeries in 2014 and officially retired from touring in 2016 to focus on his well-being.

In August 2017, he released the EP “Avīci”, which was meant to be part of a trilogy for his third album. Tragically, on April 20, 2018, Avicii died by suicide near Muscat, Oman, at the age of 28. His death spotlighted the intense mental health pressures artists face.

Posthumously, his team released the album “Tim” in 2019, which included hits like “SOS”, “Tough Love”, and “Heaven” (featuring vocals by Coldplay’s Chris Martin). In 2020, a final single, “Forever Yours,” was released with Kygo and Sandro Cavazza, honoring Avicii’s musical legacy.

Estate

Because Avicii was unmarried and left no will, his entire estate passed to his parents, Klas Bergling and Anki Lidén, under Swedish law. In 2018, it was revealed his liquid assets alone totaled $26 million, not including investments or real estate.

Avicii’s influence on the EDM genre and popular music remains unmatched. He is remembered not only for his boundary-pushing sound but also for his efforts to raise awareness about mental health, a cause his family continues to champion through the Tim Bergling Foundation.
