Deputy Governor David Kones urges farmers to embrace innovation at Nakuru ASK International Show

Farmers across Nakuru County have been encouraged to take advantage of this year’s Nakuru ASK International Show to discover modern agricultural technologies, adopt improved farming practices and build partnerships that can increase productivity and profitability.

Speaking during the Governor’s Day celebrations at the ongoing Nakuru ASK International Show, Nakuru County Deputy Governor H.E. David Kones, who represented Nakuru county  Governor Susan Kihika, emphasized the importance of innovation in transforming the agricultural sector.

Hon. Kones said the annual exhibition provides farmers with a valuable platform to interact with experts, explore emerging technologies and learn practical solutions that can help them improve production while adapting to changing climatic conditions.

He also challenged young people to consider agriculture as a promising career and business opportunity, noting that the sector has evolved far beyond traditional farming.

“Agriculture offers exciting opportunities in agribusiness, mechanisation, ICT, logistics, value addition, food processing, renewable energy, biotechnology and agricultural innovation,” said Hon. Kones.

“The future of agriculture belongs to young people who are willing to embrace technology and entrepreneurship,” he added.

The Deputy Governor reaffirmed the Nakuru County Government’s commitment to supporting farmers through transformative agricultural programmes being implemented under the leadership of Governor Susan Kihika.

He highlighted key initiatives, including the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP) and the Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KeLCoP), which are helping farmers increase incomes through value addition, improved market access and sustainable production systems. The county is also collaborating with development partners to strengthen agricultural value chains and enhance food security.

This year’s Nakuru ASK International Show is being held under the theme “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth.”

The event has recorded remarkable growth, attracting 128 exhibitors, up from 102 exhibitors during last year’s edition. The increase reflects the growing interest in agricultural innovation, agribusiness and climate-smart farming technologies.

The exhibition continues to serve as an important platform where farmers, researchers, government agencies, private sector players and development partners showcase innovations designed to improve agricultural productivity and build resilient farming systems.

Among the leaders present during the Governor’s Day celebrations were Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Chief Executive Officer Batram Muthoka, ASK Nakuru Chairman Dr. Perminus Migwi, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Leonard Bor, Chief Officer for Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services Dr. Michael Cheruiyot, Chief Officer for ICT and Public Communication Rosemary Kimani, alongside other county officials and invited guests.

As the exhibition continues, farmers are expected to benefit from demonstrations, exhibitions, networking opportunities, and expert advice that will enable them to embrace climate-smart agriculture and modern farming practices, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic growth in Nakuru County and beyond.
