Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan was born on December 8, 1976, in Berlin, West Germany.
His parents, Maureen and Austin Monaghan, were both British. His mother worked as a nurse, while his father was a science teacher. He has an older brother named Matthew.
Monaghan spent much of his childhood in Germany because of his family’s movements. He lived in cities including Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Münster.
When he was 11, his family moved to Stockport, England.
He attended St Anne’s Roman Catholic High School, where he developed an early interest in acting. He participated in school productions including A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and Bugsy Malone.
