John Rhys-Davies was born on May 5, 1944, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.
His parents were Welsh. His mother, Phyllis, worked as a nurse, while his father, Rhys, was a mechanical engineer and colonial officer.
Because of his father’s work, Rhys-Davies spent much of his childhood in Africa, particularly in Tanganyika, which was then under British colonial rule.
His family later moved to Ammanford in Carmarthenshire, Wales.
Rhys-Davies attended Truro School in Cornwall before studying at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. After graduating, he worked as a secondary school teacher in Watton, Norfolk.
