Margaret Ann Lipton was born on August 30, 1946, in New York City. Her father, Harold Lipton, was a corporate lawyer, and her mother, Rita Benson, was an artist. Peggy grew up on Long Island with her brothers, Kenneth and Robert (who also became an actor). Her paternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Russia, and her maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Latvia.

Lipton experienced early trauma, including sexual abuse by a relative, which contributed to a stutter and introversion. Her family moved to Los Angeles in 1964, where she embraced the counterculture lifestyle, practicing yoga and meditation and describing herself as a “Topanga Canyon hippie.”

At 15, Peggy signed with Ford Models.
