Early Life

Terry Steven Lewis was born on November 24, 1956, in Omaha, Nebraska, and later grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He attended Minneapolis Central High School, where he met Jimmy Jam (born James Samuel Harris III). The two quickly bonded over their passion for music and began collaborating as teenagers. Their friendship eventually evolved into one of the most influential songwriting and production partnerships in the music industry.

The Time and the Minneapolis Music Scene

Lewis and Jam first gained national exposure as members of the funk band The Time, a group formed by Prince during the rise of the Minneapolis music scene.

Lewis served as the band’s bass guitarist, while Jam played keyboards. The band became known for energetic performances and popular songs such as Jungle Love and The Bird.

In 1983, Lewis and Jam were famously fired from the band by Prince after missing a concert while working on a production project. What initially seemed like a setback ultimately allowed them to focus entirely on songwriting and music production.

Rise as a Hitmaking Production Duo

After leaving The Time, Lewis and Jam launched their production company Flyte Tyme Productions.

Their first major breakthrough came in 1984, when they worked on the album I Feel for You for Chaka Khan. The title track became a huge crossover hit and helped establish them as rising stars in the music industry.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the duo built a reputation for producing polished records that combined R&B, pop, and dance music with strong melodies and modern production techniques.

Defining Janet Jackson’s Sound

One of the most important collaborations of Lewis’s career began in 1986, when he and Jam worked with Janet Jackson on her breakthrough album Control.

The album transformed Jackson’s career and produced major hits including What Have You Done for Me Lately, Nasty, and Control.

Their partnership continued with highly successful albums such as:

  • Rhythm Nation 1814
  • janet.
  • The Velvet Rope

Rhythm Nation 1814 became one of the most influential albums of its era and produced seven Top 5 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

Working With Major Artists

Beyond their work with Janet Jackson, Lewis and Jam created hit songs for numerous global stars, including:

  • Michael Jackson
  • Mariah Carey
  • Mary J. Blige
  • Boyz II Men
  • Toni Braxton
  • New Edition

Their catalog includes dozens of Billboard No. 1 hits, making them one of the most accomplished production teams in music history.

Awards

Lewis and Jam have received numerous honors throughout their careers.

They have won multiple Grammy Awards and, in 2017, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The recognition solidified their legacy as one of the most influential songwriting partnerships in the music industry.

Both men have also been involved with The Recording Academy, the organization responsible for the Grammy Awards.

Las Vegas Residency

In 2026, Lewis and Jam launched a Las Vegas residency titled “Nothing But Hits.” The show is held at Voltaire at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The residency features live performances of songs written and produced by the duo, accompanied by guest vocalists and a full band. During the show, Lewis and Jam also share stories from the recording sessions behind their biggest hits.
