Early Life

Chamillionaire was born Hakeem Seriki on November 28, 1979, in Washington, D.C.. When he was three years old, his family moved to Houston, Texas, where he was raised.

He attended Jersey Village High School, where he developed an interest in rap music. Chamillionaire also has a younger brother, Rasaq Seriki, who later became a rapper as well.

His stage name “Chamillionaire” combines the words chameleon and millionaire, reflecting his adaptable style and ambitions.

Music Career

Chamillionaire began gaining recognition in Houston’s hip-hop scene through mixtapes and collaborations with rapper Paul Wall. The two formed the rap group The Color Changin’ Click and released the album Get Ya Mind Correct in 2002, which sold more than 150,000 copies independently.

The group’s success helped them become regular performers in the Houston rap scene and even led to appearances at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival.

Chamillionaire achieved mainstream success with his debut studio album The Sound of Revenge, released in 2005 through Universal Records and his own label Chamillitary Entertainment. The album debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified platinum.

The album featured his biggest hit, Ridin’, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2007.

His second studio album, Ultimate Victory (2007), stood out because it contained no profanity, an unusual choice in mainstream hip-hop at the time.

Chamillionaire also became known for his popular mixtape series Mixtape Messiah, which became one of the most successful mixtape projects in Texas hip-hop history.

Business

After his music career slowed in the late 2000s, Chamillionaire focused heavily on entrepreneurship and technology investing.

In 2004, he founded the independent record label Chamillitary Entertainment, which released numerous albums and mixtapes by various artists.

He also invested early in Fly Rydes, a Houston-based auto customization company that catered to the city’s car culture. Later, he launched a modeling and personal development agency called Masterpiece Mind Frame.

One of his most successful investments came in 2009, when he invested $1.5 million in Maker Studios, a digital media network focused on YouTube creators. In 2014, The Walt Disney Company acquired Maker Studios in a deal worth up to $950 million, reportedly earning Chamillionaire more than $20 million from the investment.

His growing reputation as an investor led him to become the first rapper named entrepreneur-in-residence at the venture capital firm Upfront Ventures in 2015.

Chamillionaire has also invested in several major technology companies, including:

  • Cruise Automation (later acquired by General Motors)
  • Ring, later purchased by Amazon
