Early Life

Debra Winger was born on May 16, 1955, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, to Robert and Ruth Winger. Her parents were Orthodox Jewish. Her father worked as a meat packer, while her mother was an office manager.

As a teenager, Winger traveled to Israel as part of a youth tour of a kibbutz. After returning to the United States, she was involved in a serious car accident that resulted in a cerebral hemorrhage. She was partially paralyzed and blind for about 10 months.

During her recovery, Winger decided that she would move to California and pursue acting if she regained her health.

Film Career

Winger made her film debut in the 1976 sexploitation movie Slumber Party ’57. She followed that with a role in the 1978 musical comedy Thank God It’s Friday and appeared in French Postcards in 1979.

Her breakthrough came in 1980 with Urban Cowboy, in which she starred opposite John Travolta. The performance earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA recognition and established her as one of Hollywood’s leading young actresses.

In 1982, Winger starred opposite Nick Nolte in Cannery Row and Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman. The latter became a major box-office success and earned Winger her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

She received another Oscar nomination the following year for Terms of Endearment, in which she played Emma Greenway Horton. Although Shirley MacLaine won Best Actress, Winger’s performance cemented her reputation as one of the most respected actresses of her generation.

During the remainder of the 1980s, she appeared in films including Mike’s Murder, Legal Eagles, Black Widow and Betrayed.

Winger continued receiving critical acclaim in the early 1990s. She starred in Everybody Wins, The Sheltering Sky and Leap of Faith. In 1993, she appeared in A Dangerous Woman and Shadowlands. Her portrayal of Joy Gresham in Shadowlands earned her third Academy Award nomination.

She later appeared in Forget Paris before taking an extended break from film.

Return to Hollywood

Winger returned to the big screen in 2001 with Big Bad Love, directed by her husband Arliss Howard. Her decision to step away from Hollywood became the subject of the 2002 documentary Searching for Debra Winger.

She subsequently appeared in films including Radio, Eulogy, Rachel Getting Married, Lola Versus, Boychoir, The Lovers and Kajillionaire.

Her performance in Rachel Getting Married was particularly well received and earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination.

Television Career

Winger began her television career in 1976 when she appeared as Wonder Girl in episodes of Wonder Woman. She later appeared in shows including Police Woman and James at 16.

After a lengthy absence from television, she returned in 2005 with roles in the television films Dawn Anna and Sometimes in April. Her performance in Dawn Anna earned her an Emmy Award nomination.

In 2010, Winger joined the cast of HBO’s In Treatment, playing Frances.

One of her most prominent later television roles came on Netflix’s The Ranch. From 2016 to 2020, she played Maggie Bennett, appearing alongside Ashton Kutcher, Sam Elliott and Danny Masterson.

She also appeared in When We Rise, Patriot and the Apple TV+ series Mr. Corman.

Stage Career

Winger has also maintained a connection to theatre throughout her career. In 1995, she played the Wicked Witch of the West in a Lincoln Center charity production of The Wizard of Oz.

During her Hollywood hiatus, she appeared in the American Repertory Theater’s production of Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov.

In 2012, Winger made her Broadway debut in David Mamet’s play The Anarchist.

Debra Winger’s Career Earnings

Winger’s estimated $8 million net worth has been built primarily through her acting career. Her income has come from film roles, television productions, stage performances and other entertainment-related work.

Her three Academy Award nominations helped establish her as a sought-after leading actress during the peak of her career. Later television work, particularly her roles in In Treatment and The Ranch, provided additional sources of income.

Unlike some Hollywood stars who maintained a continuous presence in blockbuster films, Winger deliberately stepped away from the industry for several years. Her career has therefore been characterized by selective roles and long-term recognition rather than a constant stream of commercial releases.

Personal Life

Winger married actor Timothy Hutton in 1986. The couple had a son, Noah, before divorcing in 1990.

In 1996, she married actor, director and screenwriter Arliss Howard. The couple has a son named Babe.

Winger has largely maintained a private personal life while continuing to work selectively in film, television and theatre.

Real Estate

In 2015, Debra Winger and Arliss Howard purchased a two-bedroom cooperative apartment on New York City’s Upper West Side for approximately $1.85 million.

The property was subsequently listed several times between 2019 and 2022 before the couple eventually sold it in May 2025 for approximately $1.495 million. The sale represented a loss of about $355,000 compared with their original purchase price.
