Early Life
Louis Gossett Jr. was born on May 27, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York City. He was the son of Louis Gossett Sr., who worked as a porter, and Hellen Gossett, a nurse.
Gossett developed an interest in acting while still in school. He attended Mark Twain Intermediate School 239 and Abraham Lincoln High School, where he appeared in a school production of You Can’t Take It with You.
While still in high school, he also stepped into the Broadway production of Take a Giant Step. Gossett later attended New York University. Although he was offered an athletic scholarship to play basketball, he chose to concentrate on acting.
Acting Career
Gossett began his professional career on stage before moving into film and television. His Broadway experience helped establish him as a serious young performer, and in 1961 he made his film debut in A Raisin in the Sun, reprising the role of George Murchison from the stage production.
He later appeared in films including The Bushbabies, The Landlord, Skin Game, Travels with My Aunt, The Laughing Policeman, The White Dawn, The River Niger, J.D.’s Revenge and The Deep.
His breakthrough on the big screen came in 1982 when he played Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman. His performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
