Evan Spiegel is an American entrepreneur with an estimated net worth of $2.6 billion. Best known as the co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, Spiegel became one of the world’s youngest self-made billionaires after leading the social media company to its historic initial public offering (IPO) in 2017. Although fluctuations in Snap’s share price have significantly affected his wealth over the years, he remains one of the technology industry’s most successful entrepreneurs.

Salary, Stock Holdings
Unlike many corporate executives, Evan Spiegel’s wealth is driven primarily by his ownership of Snap shares rather than a traditional salary.
As one of Snap’s largest shareholders, he owns more than 210 million company shares, giving him a significant ownership stake in the business.
When Snap went public on March 2, 2017, Spiegel sold approximately 16 million shares, generating an estimated $272 million before taxes. He also received an additional 37 million shares as a special compensation award for successfully leading the company through its IPO.
The value of his holdings has fluctuated significantly over the years. His fortune rose from roughly $4.5 billion in mid-2020 to about $13–15 billion in 2021 before falling sharply as Snap’s stock price declined during 2022.
Early Life
Evan Thomas Spiegel was born on June 4, 1990, in Los Angeles, California.
He was raised in the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood by his parents, John Spiegel and Melissa Thomas, both of whom worked as lawyers.
While attending Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, Spiegel developed an interest in design. He also enrolled in design courses at the Otis College of Art and Design and the ArtCenter College of Design before continuing his education at Stanford University, where he studied product design.
Snapchat and Snap Inc.
While studying at Stanford, Spiegel developed the concept for an application that allowed users to send disappearing photos and messages.
Although the idea was initially dismissed by classmates, Spiegel partnered with fellow students Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown to create the app, which was originally launched under the name Picaboo before being renamed Snapchat.
The app quickly gained popularity among younger users because of its disappearing-message feature, eventually reaching more than one million daily active users in its early stages.
Recognizing the company’s enormous potential, Spiegel left Stanford before completing his degree to focus on building Snapchat full-time.
One of the company’s biggest turning points came in 2013, when its founders rejected a reported $3 billion acquisition offer from Facebook. The decision proved highly successful as Snap’s valuation continued to climb rapidly over the following years.

Snap’s Historic IPO
Snap Inc. debuted on the New York Stock Exchange on March 2, 2017, in one of the technology industry’s most closely watched public offerings.
Although the company priced its shares at $17, the stock opened at $24, giving Snap a market valuation of approximately $20 billion on its first day of trading.
The successful listing officially established Spiegel as one of the world’s youngest billionaire CEOs while he was still in his twenties.
Wealth Fluctuations
Evan Spiegel’s fortune has closely mirrored the performance of Snap’s stock.
As investor enthusiasm for technology companies surged during 2020 and 2021, his net worth increased dramatically, reaching approximately $15 billion at its peak.
However, changing market conditions, slowing growth in the technology sector and declining advertising revenue caused Snap’s share price to fall sharply throughout 2022. The decline reduced Spiegel’s fortune by billions of dollars, although he remains one of the wealthiest figures in the technology industry.
Personal Life
Evan Spiegel began dating Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr in 2015.
The couple became engaged in 2016 before marrying in May 2017. They have two sons together.
After becoming a father, Spiegel returned to Stanford University to complete the remaining coursework needed for his degree, graduating in 2018 after previously leaving school to build Snapchat.
That same year, he also obtained French citizenship under a provision that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to France’s culture or economy.
Real Estate
Spiegel has invested heavily in luxury real estate with his wife, Miranda Kerr.
In 2014, he purchased a home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, for approximately $3.3 million before later listing it for sale in 2024.
Two years later, he acquired another Brentwood estate from actor Harrison Ford for $12 million. The property became the couple’s wedding venue after their marriage in 2017 and was later listed for nearly $20 million.
The couple also owns a vineyard in Australia and a Malibu residence. Their most significant property investment came in 2021 when they reportedly spent around $100 million acquiring a luxury estate under construction in Holmby Hills, California, located near the iconic Playboy Mansion.
