Requirements for DT SACCOs license application
The Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) has spelled out a list of requirements that deposit-taking SACCOs must meet before renewing their operating licenses.
The regulator said all SACCOs holding deposit-taking licenses will be required to obtain application forms and fit-and-proper test forms for their board members and senior managers.
SASRA further directed SACCOs to present a certified copy of their registration certificate, a verified notification of their registered head office, as well as a certified copy of their bylaws, business plan, and minutes of the latest Annual General Meeting.
The regulator also wants SACCOs seeking license renewal to submit the proposed name of their Chief Executive Officer, the past three years’ audited accounts, and proof of adequate capital. Each applicant must also pay an application fee of Sh3,000 and provide a deposit slip or banker’s draft as evidence of payment.
“Note that SASRA may ask for additional information on any of the licensing requirements for purposes of assessing the application,” the Authority stated.
The announcement comes just two days after SASRA warned that some SACCOs were operating without valid licenses, a move that contravenes the SACCO Societies Act.
According to the regulator, all deposit-taking SACCOs are required to apply for license renewal at least 90 days before expiry. The renewal window for 2026 licenses opened this week and will close on September 30, 2025.
“The Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority reminds all deposit-taking SACCOs that the renewal window for their 2026 deposit-taking licenses is open from now until 30th September 2025,” SASRA said.
“Applications must be submitted in line with the guidance note and the license application checklist available on our website: sasra.go.ke,” the Authority added.
