Early Life
Slash was born Saul Hudson on July 23, 1965, in Hampstead, London. Music and the arts were part of his family environment from an early age.
His mother, Ola J. Hudson, was a costume designer who worked with major entertainment figures, including David Bowie, Ringo Starr and Janis Joplin. His father, Anthony Hudson, was an artist who designed album covers for musicians such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.
Slash moved from England to Los Angeles while he was young because of his parents’ careers. He began taking an interest in music and eventually developed a particular passion for the guitar.
His parents separated in 1974, and Slash later described himself as a rebellious young person. He attended Beverly Hills High School, where he was a classmate of future rock musician Lenny Kravitz.
The nickname “Slash” was given to him by actor Seymour Cassel, who knew his family.
Beginning of His Music Career
Slash joined his first band, Tidus Sloan, in 1981. He later formed a Motorhead tribute band in 1983, although the group lasted only a short time.
He subsequently joined Black Sheep, which performed alongside Hollywood Rose. It was during this period that Slash became connected to musicians who would eventually form Guns N’ Roses.

Guns N’ Roses
Guns N’ Roses quickly developed a reputation for its aggressive music, rebellious image and energetic performances.
The band’s 1987 debut album, “Appetite for Destruction,” became a landmark rock record. It eventually sold more than 28 million copies worldwide and produced major hits such as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”
“Sweet Child o’ Mine” became the band’s first No. 1 hit in the United States in 1988. Slash’s guitar intro and solo became among the most recognizable guitar parts in popular music.
Guns N’ Roses followed the success of its debut with “G N’ R Lies,” which also became a major commercial success.
The band’s rapid rise brought fame and financial success, but tensions among its members also increased. Drug use, creative disagreements and conflicts over the group’s direction contributed to instability within the band.

Leaving Guns N’ Roses
Slash left Guns N’ Roses in 1996 following growing disagreements within the band.
Rather than ending his career, the departure gave him an opportunity to explore other musical projects.
He formed Slash’s Snakepit, which released its first album, “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” in 1995. The group later released “Ain’t Life Grand” in 2000.
Slash also established himself as a sought-after session musician. Over the years, he collaborated with numerous major artists, including Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan.
His work outside Guns N’ Roses demonstrated that his reputation as a guitarist extended beyond his original band.
Velvet Revolver
In 2004, Slash joined forces with former Guns N’ Roses members Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum to form Velvet Revolver.
The group recruited Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland as its singer and released its debut album, “Contraband,” that same year.
“Contraband” became a major commercial success and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album helped establish Velvet Revolver as a major rock act.
The band won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for “Slither” in 2005.
Velvet Revolver later released “Libertad” in 2007 before going on hiatus following Weiland’s departure.

Slash launched his formal solo career with his self-titled album in 2010.

Personal Life
Slash was first married to model Renee Suran. The couple married in 1992 and divorced in 1997.
He later married Perla Ferrar in Hawaii in 2001. They have two sons, London Emilio and Cash Anthony.
Slash and Ferrar separated in 2010 before reconciling. Slash filed for divorce again in 2014, beginning a lengthy and contentious legal process.
As part of the eventual divorce settlement, Slash agreed to pay millions of dollars as well as monthly spousal and child support. He retained ownership of his guitars and music publishing rights.
Slash is a dual citizen of the United Kingdom and the United States. Although he has spent much of his life in Los Angeles, he has maintained a strong connection to his British background.
Health and Sobriety
Slash has spoken publicly about his history of substance abuse and his decision to become sober.
He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2001. He subsequently made significant lifestyle changes and has said that he has been sober since 2005.
His mother, Ola Hudson, died from lung cancer in 2009. Following her death, Slash also quit smoking.
